Board Highlights
May 28, 2008

At last night’s meeting of the Tri-Board of St. Joseph’s, Public General and Sydenham District Hospitals, Directors:

  • Received a comprehensive presentation on CKHA’s Corporate Balanced Scorecard. The four quadrants cover Clinical Utilization and Outcome, Patient Satisfaction and Safety, Financial Performance and Condition, and System Integration and Change. Directors noted comparable patient admissions to last year; continued high patient satisfaction rates; and improvements in average length of stay, readmission rates, infection rates, percentage of patients awaiting placement in community, and wait times. By tracking progress on key, quality indicators such as these, CKHA can measure effectiveness, efficiency, safety and service to patients, families, staff and public. The Balanced Scorecard will be available for public information on CKHA’s website beginning in June.
  • Endorsed four Strategic Directions and 21 supporting corporate goals for the fiscal years 2009-2011. The Directions are the result of the strategic planning retreat held earlier this month, and pre-retreat surveys and consultations with staff, community and healthcare partners. The Directions, which support a vision of “Redefining Healthcare”, focus on Patients, People, Innovation, and Performance. The Directions will help guide the development of program level goals and budgets in the coming months. They will be publicly launched in Spring 2009 when they take effect, along with CKHA’s renewed Mission and Values.
  • Heard the monthly report from its Mission and Quality Committee including the quarterly update on Pastoral Care activities which included memorial services, masses, celebrations, orientation and presentations on everyday ethics. The report also included an update of progress in clinical ethics education, issues and next
  • Were advised that the MRI project is on schedule for first clinical use in early July. Medical Radiation Technologists have been recruited and an official opening will occur in the summer.
  • Acknowledged the Foundation of CKHA which, with generous community support, has raised over $1 million in the first six months of the Making the Right Investment – MRI Campaign.
  • Noted that June is provincially recognized as Stroke Month. CKHA’s District Stroke Centre encourages public to know the signs and symptoms of stroke, and to seek immediate care and treatment because time is brain. The Annual Stroke Garden Party, a celebration for stroke survivors, their families, friends and caregivers, is scheduled for June 26th from 1-3 pm in the riverfront Healing Garden (Chatham campus).
  • Received the monthly report of its Finance, Audit and Resources Committee, noting the Central Ambulance Communication Centre is slated to open in Wallaceburg in July.
  • Supported embarking on a process to develop a master program/master plan, and role review for CKHA, in order to address facility functionality and deficiency issues at aging sites in Chatham and Wallaceburg. A master program describes the facility’s current and future role in the community, outlining current and projected programs, staffing and departmental space requirements. A master plan translates the master program into a physical plan, analyzes site use options and defines predicted states of development for the facilities. Discussions are underway with the Erie St. Clair LHIN regarding their financial and strategic support and participation. The first step in this lengthy process is to procure the consulting firm. Consultation and communication will be ongoing throughout the process.
  • Welcomed John Stoneman, the interim CEO of Consolidated Health Information Services until such time as the executive search is complete. He steps in for Sharon Pfaff who accepted a position earlier this month with Cancer Care Ontario.

The Tri-Board Annual General Meeting and 10-year Report to the Community is June 17th, beginning at 3:00 pm at St. Clair College, Thames Campus.

The next Tri-Board meeting is June 24, 2008 beginning at 6:30 pm in CKHA’s Education Centre.

Both are open to staff and public. Kindly RSVP 519-437-6001..
