Board Highlights
February 24, 2009
At last night’s meeting of the Tri-Board of St. Joseph’s, Public General and Sydenham District Hospitals, Directors:
- Extended appreciation to Dr. Sheri Roszell who served as Chief of the Emergency Department and Medical Director of Emergency Department, Ambulatory Care and Community Health from 2006-2008.
- Received financial statements for the ten months ended January 31st noting a year end deficit forecast of $4 million and the need to proceed with recommendations contained in the operational review in order to bring costs into line and achieve a balanced budget for the coming year. The review, conducted by Deloitte in consultation with clinical and support department leaders, highlighted improvement strategies related to efficiency, effectiveness, utilization, and performance targets at or above peer hospitals. These opportunities, spread over 15-months ending March 2010, represent targeted savings of $4.7 to $5.9 million. The report, along with a companion Q & A document, is publicly posted on CKHA’s website www.ckha.on.ca
- Were updated on the process of CKHA’s master program / master plan development. Statistical projections about beds, programming, case mix, system capacity, community health demographics, and facility assessment are part of the extensive review.
- Expressed appreciation to staff and physicians who served during the potential flooding of the Sydenham River. The code orange stand-by signaled a number of measures to assure patient safety and continuity of care in the event of a managed evacuation of CKHA’s Sydenham campus. CKHA’s team worked with Chatham-Kent’s emergency measures staff, police, fire, EMS personnel and local media during the flood watch. CKHA’s response plan will be featured in an upcoming publication of the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care Emergency Services Branch.
- Noted that CKHA is internally vetting the Erie St. Clair LHIN’s Emergency Department study through Tri-Board committees, in preparation to dialogue further with the LHIN regarding options suggested.
- Supported efforts to advance hand hygiene compliance amongst hospital staff and physicians. CKHA’s goal is 100% compliance with the four moments of hand hygiene, with performance results to be publicly posted on CKHA’s website beginning in April.
- Received a performance report for Health + Wellbeing magazine, published 3 times/year by CKHA and the Foundation of CKHA. The publication is designed to increase awareness and market share, support recruitment and retention, provide health promotion information, report on hospital performance and support donor relations. Results of a recent readership survey indicate that the magazine is a preferred method of hospital and foundation communications. The magazine, circulated with an enclosed donor response card, has also generated over $142,000 to date.
- Viewed poster displays highlighting CKHA’s Best Practice work in partnership with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. (News Release available at www.ckha.on.ca)
- Congratulated the Foundation of CKHA on its Dancing for the Stars fundraising event with proceeds supporting the Making the Right Investment, MRI campaign. With generous support from donors, the MRI campaign has raised $2,165,098 to date.
The next regularly scheduled Tri-Board meeting is March 31, 2009 beginning at 6:30 pm at the Municipal Service Centre in Wallaceburg. Staff and public are welcomed - kindly RSVP 519-437-6001.
