Board Highlights
January 27, 2010

At last night’s meeting of the Tri-Board of St. Joseph’s, Public General and Sydenham District Hospitals, Directors:

  • Viewed a presentation by the Canadian Council of Health Services Association regarding the national Accreditation program. Called Qmentum, the process assesses patient safety and quality at every level.  CKHA’s next voluntary accreditation process is December 2010.
  • Received financial statements for the period ended December 31st.  Holiday closures and lower patient volumes during the month, resulted in improved financial performance.  The projected year-end deficit based on the first nine months, is $960,899.  Hospitals are required to develop financial scenarios for 0%, 1% or 2% funding while they await the government’s funding announcement.
  • Noted that 3-hour educational sessions promoting patient and family centred care and service excellence are rolling out to all staff, physicians and volunteers with a goal of 100% participation.
  • Heard of the initiation of Leadership Safety Walk Arounds. With a commitment to providing a culture of safety for patients and staff, Walk Arounds provide an opportunity for members of the executive team to connect with front-line staff directly to listen to their suggestions regarding safety.  Since October, these have been conducted on Inpatient Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging and Inpatient Medicine.
  • Were pleased to hear that CKHA received a Ministry grant of $90,128 to develop department-specific health and safety orientation programs including templates and guidelines for conducting risk assessments, identifying hazards and violence in the workplace and developing controls to protect employees. The project is slated for completion by March 31st. CKHA is pleased that the Ministry is supportive of the Alliance’s philosophy of providing a safe work environment for staff.
  • Heard that the Tobacco Enforcement Officer from the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit is now making rounds on CKHA properties, with the authority to hand out significant fines to offenders of CKHA’s Smoke-Free Property policy.
  • Noted the continuation of public dialogue during CKHA Today and Tomorrow – Part II.  Three meetings were held in Wallaceburg in January and further meetings are scheduled in Blenheim, Ridgetown, Tilbury and Chatham.  Sessions are designed to continue the public dialogue initiated during the Fall information sessions; respond to questions raised; build community knowledge of local healthcare services; and receive feedback on the guiding principles of CKHA’s !magine project. The presentation panel includes representatives from the Tri-Board, senior management, medical leadership and the LHIN. (see related News Release)
  • Extended appreciation to the Foundation of CKHA and its generous donors. The total for the Making the Right Investment – MRI Campaign is $3,553,750.97. Directors now look forward to Dancing for the Stars on February 20th.

The Tri-Board’s next meeting is February 23rd, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Municipal Service Centre in Wallaceburg.
