May 26, 2010
At last night’s meeting of the Tri-Board of St. Joseph’s, Public General and Sydenham District Hospitals, Directors:
- Heard that CKHA is developing care plans and education regarding a regionally co-ordinated Surge Capacity Management Program to deal with situations where critical care demand exceeds available resources. The advance planning will address situations where one hospital in the LHIN is unable to sustain their critical care services and requires the resources of another hospital in the LHIN to ensure patients receive timely access to care. The program will ensure that patients are transferred from the Emergency Department or Operating Room to critical care services as quickly as possible, mobilizing hospital staff, equipment and technology to handle a short-term increase in demand.
- Received the monthly report of its Mission & Quality Committee noting continued monitoring of key performance indicators including infection rates, hand hygiene compliance and patient falls. Action plans implemented in the past several months have been successful in reducing the number of falls, with better recognition by patients, families and visitors of the new identification signs and required precautionary measures.
- Acknowledged the work of the Physiotherapy Department, during this, National Physiotherapy Month. The department held an Open House with guided tours and displays of CKHA’s facilities and equipment.
- Extended appreciation to CKHA’s Nurses during May’s National Nurses Week. The week’s celebrations included a full schedule of events and the launch of an expansion to CKHA’s website where a new webpage communicates initiatives of the Chief Nursing Executive/Chief Health Professions Officer. This includes information that the public can access about the Professional Practice Model and Team, a description of the professional practice standards and outcomes committee, CKHA’s Best Practice Spotlight Organization designation, student placements and job postings, and a new blog with weekly updates and ongoing initiatives and events.
- Noted the Proposed Excellent Care for All Act, with the emphasis on reporting of quality related issues to hospital boards, annual quality improvement plans, declaration of the organizational values and assessment of service satisfaction.
- Noted CKHA’s website content as it pertains to governance and public accountability. Current content includes Board Highlights (posted after each Tri-Board meeting), strategic plan, balanced scorecard, performance reports, accountability agreement, operational review report, information on financial recovery, and presentations from community engagement sessions. CKHA will look at ways to further enhance its website to meet the information needs of the community. www.ckha.on.ca
- Received the financial statements, executive summary and activity reports on financial performance; and congratulated management and staff on achieving a year end operating surplus of $26,760 – a significant improvement over the past two years’ operating deficits.
- Endorsed the Chief of Professional Staff’s annual Goals and Objectives.
- Acknowledged staff, volunteers and physicians who supported the Spring Shindig. Organized voluntarily by staff, the event raised over $8,000 for the Employee Crisis Fund. The purpose of the fund is to assist employees who have suffered a serious and significant financial hardship. It is entirely funded through the generosity of CKHA employees and demonstrates the commitment of employees to CKHA’s Mission, Vision and Values.
- Noted this weekend’s SKHIP - It’s a joints effort – hosted by the Foundation of CKHA on May 29th at the Active Lifestyle Centre in Chatham. The walk benefits the Orthopaedic program. Participants and sponsors are welcomed by the Foundation of CKHA.
The next monthly Tri-Board meeting is June 22nd beginning at 6:30 pm in the Education Centre, Chatham campus. The Annual General Meeting is Thursday, June 24th at 3:00 pm at St. Clair College. Meetings of the Tri-Board are open to the public. Kindly RSVP 519-437-6001.
