An intravenous will be started in your hand or arm and your vital signs checked before the transfusion begins.

Each bag of blood takes 1 to 2 hours to flow into your body. Your vital signs will be checked frequently.

You will stay several hours, depending upon the number of bags of blood you are to receive.

Television is available and you may wish to bring a book, magazines or craft work to help you pass the time during your transfusion.

You will be provided with a lunch tray and cold drinks during your stay. Please let the nurse know if you require a special diet or have food allergies.
