Ambulatory Procedures - Blood Transfusion

Preparation

  • Your doctor will ask you to go to the lab to cross match your blood 1 to 2 days before transfusion
  • Eat, drink and take your medications as usual.

What to Expect

  • An intravenous will be started in your hand or arm and your vital signs checked before the transfusion begins.
  • Each bag of blood takes 1 to 2 hours to flow into your body. Your vital signs will be checked frequently.
  • You will stay several hours, depending upon the number of bags of blood you are to receive.
  • Television is available and you may wish to bring a book, magazines or craft work to help you pass the time during your transfusion.
  • You will be provided with a lunch tray and cold drinks during your stay. Please let the nurse know if you require a special diet or have food allergies.

Follow Up

  • See your family doctor as directed.
  • Keep the card that says you received blood products.
