Best Practice Spotlight Organization

In April of 2009, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance was officially designated a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO). The designation was bestowed by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) at their Annual General Meeting held in Toronto.

CKHA, one of 21 organizations in Ontario to have this prestigious designation, earned it by implementing and evaluating a series of RNAO’s internationally-recognized, evidence-based best practice guidelines.

“Spotlight organizations support nurses to enhance their practice based on the best knowledge so they can provide the highest quality of care to their patients. Such organizations are better equipped to achieve positive health outcomes for patients, retain a qualified nursing workforce and successfully recruit staff,” says Irmajean Bajnok, Director of International Affairs and Best Practice Guidelines Programs at RNAO.

“Nurses at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance are doing pioneering work,” says Wendy Fucile, President of RNAO. “Achieving a BPSO designation recognizes their commitment to sharing their experience and expertise with other health-care organizations who are interested in implementing RNAO’s guidelines.”

The Best Practice Guidelines which have been implemented, or are in the process of being implemented at CKHA are:  Client Centred Care; Nursing Management of Hypertension; Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older Adult; Establishing Therapeutic Relationships; Breastfeeding Best Practice Guidelines for Nurses; Risk Assessment & Prevention of Pressure Ulcers / Assessment & Management of Stage I – IV Pressure Ulcers; Screening for Delirium, Dementia & Depression in Older Adults; Caregiving Strategies for Older Adults with Delirium, Dementia and Depression; Stroke Assessment across the Continuum of Care; Integrating Smoking Cessation into Daily Nursing Practice; Promoting Continence using prompted Voiding; Suicide Prevention; Prevention & Management of Violence in the Workplace and Collaborative Practice.
