Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Implements Innovative and Sustainable Urology Solution for Chatham-Kent with support of Regional Partners

Chatham-Kent: July 10, 2015 -- Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) is committed to sustainable access to urology services in Chatham-Kent through an innovative and collaborative model which supports a high functioning healthcare system for patients and families.

Today, Urologists from Bluewater Health in Sarnia and a specially-trained Nurse Practitioner (NP) from CKHA, are working together to support the Alliance's and community's needs.

"We have worked to ensure that any patient who requires the care of a Urologist has access to one of the Specialists from the Sarnia group and have ensured that we have access to a high quality, leading practice service that covers the needs of the hospital and our patients," notes Dr. Elizabeth Haddad, Chief of Surgery, CKHA. "In order to better support our community, we are also very excited that we are now able to provide on-site services at CKHA including ambulatory care clinics and cystoscopies with one of the Urologists coming to CKHA one day a week."

As part of the Department of Surgery, Urology services at CKHA benefitted from the support of two local urologists; however, the organization was notified last September that one of these physicians would be retiring by the end of the calendar year. Since then, the second Urologist notified the organization of his intention to leave in February 2015 and departed the community in April 2015.

CKHA responded to this news by putting in place a plan that allows it to continue to ensure access to urology services for its Emergency Department, Inpatient Units and Outpatients by partnering with the group of Urologists from Bluewater Health as well as investing in the training of a specialized Nurse Practitioner.

"We are excited to be supporting an innovative and regional approach to urology services that offers high quality patient care to the community of Chatham-Kent, supports the needs of both hospitals and advances an inter-professional and collaborative model, with the inclusion of Corrine Pollard, NP," says Dr. Alvaro Ramirez, Urologist, Sarnia Urology Group. "Last month we started our first on-site clinics at CKHA, where we were welcomed by the entire team. We believe this is a great example of how community hospitals can work together to create solutions to address patient care needs across geographical boundaries."

Through an innovative and collaborative model, the granting of physician privileges to the Sarnia Urologists, and the enhanced role of the NP, CKHA has put in place a solution to use the best resources across geographical boundaries to support essential patient care.

"We know it is no longer possible for every hospital to make the same investments in technology and equipment," says Sarah Padfield, Chief Operating Officer, "this type of partnership allows us to maintain our diagnostic role by providing cystoscopies and assessment clinics with bigger more complex procedures being done at Bluewater Health in Sarnia. We are committed to providing access to our community to on-site Urology services. We are thrilled that Drs. Ramirez, Martin and Singh have started their on-site services and to have Corrine Pollard, NP, being able to provide regular and non-complex urological care at other times in Ambulatory Care is truly meeting the community's needs in a new and innovative way."
