Local Internist Honoured with Schulich School of Medicine "Best Specialist Teacher" Award

CHATHAM-KENT: June 23, 2014 -- Chatham-Kent Internist, Dr. Quoc Tran, received the Best Specialist Teacher Award from Western University, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at an award ceremony in London, Ontario. The University award recognizes a physician who makes outstanding contributions to teaching in the Family Medicine Residency Program by the medical school.

According to Dr. Anna Johnson, Second Year Family Medicine Resident who nominated Dr. Tran on behalf of the Family Medicine residents at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA), “Our residency program is still in the early years of inception and Dr. Tran has been instrumental in helping ensure its success. As one of the few local internists, he has an extremely busy practice. Despite this, he is very approachable and always available for questions or ‘hallway’ consults. Apart from being an excellent clinician, he is a genuinely kind person who cares about the welfare of his patients. Furthermore, he has been spending two hours of his personal time on Friday afternoons for extra teaching sessions where he reviews recent guidelines on an internal medicine topic, provides discussion about the nuances of management of patients with chronic diseases, presents cases of current inpatients or offers a stack of electrocardiograms for interpretation. These sessions have been invaluable for the residents at our site.”

Dr. Tran oversees the Medicine rotation for all the residents and ensures their exposure to local sub-specialty clinics, the Intensive Care Unit/Progressive Care Unit as well as time observing or assisting with procedures such as bone marrow biopsies or nuclear stress tests. As noted in the nomination, the residents believe the success and strength of this regional Family Medicine Program depends on preceptors like Dr. Tran, who are outside of Family Medicine, and contribute their time and expertise to facilitate their learning. They are very pleased that Dr. Tran was recognized for going above and beyond in his role.

“It is an honour to win this award and the recognition that comes with it. I enjoy teaching and my time with the residents and students,” said Dr. Tran. “Being part of this excellent teaching group in Chatham Kent has allowed us to expand the residency program and be part of the future of physician leadership. I would like to thank my colleagues, the residents and Chatham-Kent Health Alliance for all of their support.”

“Dr. Tran is a highly valued and respected Internal Medicine specialist and is a great resource for our preceptors, residents and students. On behalf of the Western preceptors in Chatham-Kent I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Dr. Quoc Tran. Without him our teaching program would not be as robust or as successful,” said Dr. Susan Munro, Lead Physician of the Family Medicine Residency Program. “He devotes several hours of his own time for in depth internal medicine case discussions. The competition for this award was very considerable and we are proud to have Dr. Tran as part of our team.”

Dr. Tran completed his residency at Queens University. He became a Royal College certified Internist in 1999 and has been teaching for over 10 years at CKHA. He is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Once again, CKHA’s leading performance is acknowledged and recognized. CKHA is pleased to add physician leadership to its list of recent national and provincial level accolades, which also included green stewardship & leadership, education & learning, and program performance, particularly in Mental Health & Addictions, Oncology and the Emergency Department.
