The award recognizes outstanding achievement in mental health relating to general hospitals in Ontario and was presented by June Hylands, the Executive Director of the Association of General Hospital Psychiatric Services (AGHSP), in conjunction with the Jane Chamberlin lecture in Toronto during the Annual Conference of the Ontario Psychiatric Association (OPA) over the weekend.

"I've been extremely fortunate to work in two outstanding organizations, with leaders and front line staff who are genuinely invested in transforming the mental health care within the community of Chatham-Kent. Our clients, families and partners have shared with us, the positive impact that our programs are making, and we look forward to many future opportunities that this integration has introduced us to," said Reaume-Zimmer.

The AGHPS noted Paula's dedicated contribution to excellence in mental health services, both locally, regionally, including the following examples:

  • Leading an innovative integration between hospital and community mental health leadership and front-line services
  • Drawing recognition to a uniquely integrated model; regionally, provincially, and most recently nationally, at the National Healthcare Leadership Conference
  • Co-leading the Health Links Clinical Advisory Committee, aiming to rebuild relationships with primary healthcare and embedding mental health front and centre in the Health Links agenda throughout Ontario
  • Developing newly established relationships throughout Chatham-Kent, in the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network region and throughout the province with ministry and health organizations

"Paula has done so much to foster awareness and compassion in understanding mental health in our community. She has been instrumental in shaping high-quality mental health services for those who require it, as well as improved models of clinical care with the Mental Health and Addictions program. We are grateful and proud of Paula who chose Chatham-Kent to establish and grow her career," said Colin Patey, President & Chief Executive Officer, CKHA.

Over the past 20 years, Ms. Reaume-Zimmer has played a key role in the establishment and development of mental health and addictions services for all ages in Chatham-Kent. She has been instrumental in introducing successful initiatives, innovative practices, and creating a network of support which follows the patient from hospital back to the community.

"It has been a privilege to work with Paula over the past few years to create a fully integrated mental health system in Chatham-Kent, Paula is truly deserving of this award," said Alan Stevenson, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Mental Health Association - Lambton Kent.

The first Jane Chamberlin Award was awarded in 1999. Jane Chamberlin was the Executive Director for the Association of General Hospital Psychiatric Services during the 1990s. Upon her death it was decided to recognize her contribution by presenting an annual award in her honour to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to mental health in Ontario.
