Diagnostic Imaging

CT Scans

A CT scan is a type of advanced X-ray that takes detailed pictures of the inside of your body. You lie on a table that moves through a large, doughnut-shaped machine. As you pass through it, the machine takes many X-ray images from different angles. A computer then combines these pictures to create clear, cross-section views—like looking at individual slices of a loaf of bread. These slices can be stacked together to give doctors a better understanding of what’s going on inside your body.

Contrast dye is often used in CT which helps certain parts of your body show up more clearly on the scan. It makes blood vessels, organs, or other tissues easier for doctors to see. The dye can be given in different ways: through an IV in your arm, by drinking it, or sometimes as an injection in another area. Once the dye is in your body, it absorbs the X-rays differently than your normal tissues, which makes the images brighter and clearer. This helps doctors spot things like infections, blockages, tumours, or other problems more accurately. Most people do fine with contrast dye. Some may feel warm, get a metallic taste in their mouth, or feel like they need to urinate—these sensations are common and usually go away quickly. Serious reactions are rare, but the medical team always checks your history to make sure it’s safe for you.
