Diagnostic Imaging
Echocardiography
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound that uses sound waves to create moving pictures of your heart, showing its size, structure, and function. It’s a non-invasive test that helps doctors diagnose and monitor various heart conditions, such as heart murmurs, heart valve problems, damage from a heart attack, and heart failure.
What to expect:
You will lie on a table and may need to hold your breath for short periods.
There is no radiation exposure, unlike an X-ray.
Preparation Instructions
- Clothing: Leads will be placed on your chest, so wear flexible clothing that can be easily removed from the waist up.
- Skin preparation: Your chest may need to be shaved or cleaned to ensure proper electrode placement.
- Avoid caffeine prior to your exam.
- Avoid products: Do not use body powder or lotion before the exam.
- Medications: Continue taking your medications as usual unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
