Diagnostic Imaging

MRI

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan uses a powerful magnet, radiofrequency waves, and a computer to create cross-sectional images of internal organs and structures. It does not use ionizing radiation as x-ray and computed tomography (CT) scans do. You must be free of metal for your test, including all jewelry and piercings. The scanner resembles a large tube with a table in the middle, allowing the patient to slide in. You can expect most of your body to go inside the MRI scanner. If you have claustrophobia, a fear of confined spaces, please discuss with your doctor prior to your MRI appointment.

Preparation Instructions

Please carefully follow the preparation instructions provided by the Patient Appointment Office when your appointment is booked. These instructions are essential to ensure your exam is accurate and can be completed as scheduled.

Information for your MRI
  • Contrast Injection: Your MRI may include a Gadolinium contrast dye injection.
  • If you have kidney disease, kidney function issues, or are on dialysis, your doctor must submit a serum creatinine blood test (within 6 months) and fax the results to the Patient Appointment Office before your MRI.
  • Claustrophobia: If you are claustrophobic, speak with your referring doctor about medication options to help you relax. If you take medication for this, you must bring someone to drive you home, or your MRI will be rescheduled.
  • Remove all piercings and jewelry before your MRI.
  • Do not wear eye makeup to your appointment.
