Emergency Department
Core Programs
Emergency Services
When patients arrive at the ED, they are greeted by a triage nurse. These nurses are specially trained in triage, which is a system used to make sure the sickest patients are taken care of right away. The nurse will assess the patient’s condition as quickly as possible by checking temperature and blood pressure and discussing directly with the patient their reason for seeking emergency care. Once the patient has seen the triage nurse, they may be taken immediately into the department or asked to register and wait in the waiting room. If a patient’s condition changes or worsens at any time, they are advised to notify the triage nurse immediately.
