Finance & Billing Information for Patients
To help make your visit as smooth and stress-free as possible, CKHA has prepared the following information about insurance coverage, room charges, and what you may need to bring with you.
What to Bring to the Hospital
Please bring the following identification and insurance information:
- Your OHIP Health Card – required for all hospital visits and admissions.
- Your Extended Health Insurance Card – required if you are requesting preferred accommodation such as a semi-private or private room.
Understanding Your Coverage
If you are a Canadian resident and have a valid OHIP or provincial health card, most expenses related to your care are usually covered by the Ontario Ministry of Health (OHIP) or your provincial insurance plan. This includes ward/in-patient rooms (a room with three or four beds), supplied food, x-rays, medication, laboratory services, medical and surgical equipment, support services, and more.
Services and rooms not covered under your provincial health card will require that you use your extended health insurance card. Part of understanding your coverage may include you contacting your extended health insurance provider to confirm the type of room you are covered for or any coverage caps, such as yearly limits, daily visit limits, or room coverage maximums.
Coverage can change, so please verify your plan each time you visit the hospital. If you have signed for your room preference upon registration but later discover you no longer have coverage, please contact our Finance Department at (519) 352-6400 ext. 6339 or Admitting at (519) 352-6400 ext. 6005. Once you are admitted and you opt for a semi-private (a room with 2 beds) or private room (a room with 1 bed), Registration will have you verify and sign for your preferred accommodation. This will be directed to your extended health insurance company.
As of October 1, 2025, preferred accommodation room rates are:
- Semi-Private Room: $275 per day
- Private Room: $325 per day
If your extended health insurance only covers a portion of the cost of a semi-private or private room, or has a limit on the number of days, you may be required to pay the difference. Note: Ambulance transportation, some procedures, and supplies are not fully covered by OHIP and are the responsibility of the patient. Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works, CCAC, Ontario Health at Home recipients, and residents of Long-Term Care Homes are exempt from ambulance fees (proof of receipt required).
If you require an extended hospital stay (continuing care or rehabilitation) or are ready for discharge home or to a long-term care facility, there may be additional charges not covered by OHIP that you will be required to pay.
If you do not have provincial or private health insurance, you will be responsible for the full cost of your hospital stay. To avoid surprises, we strongly recommend requesting a quote for your care in advance and arranging payment before your admission.
